I'm cutting fabric for some 12 x 12 finished blocks & have a question about the difference between half-square and quarter-square triangles. Are they interchangeable?

Half vs Quarter Squares
by: Rebecca

Half-square triangle and quarter-square triangle are different terms that mean different things.

A half-square triangle is when a square is cut directly in half, diagonally from one corner to the other. The result of one square being cut this way, makes two triangles.

A quarter-square triangle is made when cutting diagonally corner to corner and then also the opposite corner to corner. Think of the cutting as an X across the square. The result of one square being cut this way, makes 4 triangles.

I hope this helps.

Happy quilting,
