Quilting templates are guides to help you make quilting masterpieces. They can be used for cutting fabric pieces or to show you where your quilting stitches should be placed.
We’ll explain the different kinds of templates and why they are used. Then we’ll let you know how you can make your own!
The most common templates for quilting are used as a guide for cutting fabric. This is to make sure that your pieces are the exact size and shape needed for a pattern. Usually these involve shapes that are abnormal or curved.
Good examples of these forms are hearts, circles, stars, hexagons, or other unusual figures.
Why would you want to use these templates?
Some wonderful quilting creations use irregular shapes, something different than just squares, rectangles, and triangles. Unusual structures create eye-catching works of art.
Sometimes you can find templates like these in quilting books or magazines.
We recommend tracing the design from the paper onto a sheet of template plastic. Once you cut out the shape, you’ll have a template that will last forever.
On occasion, especially when you are busy, you might want to skip the do-it-yourself stuff and buy pre-made templates. Several already made templates can be found at your local craft shops.
These types of templates are perfect for guiding your quilting stitches. They can be used for either hand quilting or machine quilting.
What shapes can stencils be used for?
