Quilted Pieces to Applique

by Judy McComb
(Hamilton, ON, Canada)

Hi,

I have several quilt sections that have been sewn together by ladies on my maternal side of my family. (see photos).

It has been suggested to me to applique these pieces onto fabric and quilt them into throw pillow covers.

My question is, would you hand stitch them onto the base fabric or machine sew them on?

Thanks,
Judy

Edges
by: Rebecca

Hi,

I like to turn under the edges if I'm sewing by hand.

If I'm sewing with my machine I leave them raw and make sure the edge is completely covered with my stitches.

My other question, is when stitching these down, turn in the edge or leave rough edge showing?

Applique
by: Rebecca

Hi Judy,

It would be quilter's choice.

Can your hands put up with sewing that much by hand?

Do you have the time and patience?

Personally, I prefer taking my time and sewing by hand when it comes to applique.

I dread having to lean over my sewing machine for long periods of time.

It will be interesting what others have to say.

Happy stitching,
Rebecca
