I keep nicking the blades on my rotory cutter, can you give me any advice?

It seems there was a rough spot on the ruler that I was hitting with the blade.

I also have had that same problem with 2 blades. I don't cut over pins and use a cardboard cutting board. So other than that can't discover why it keeps getting a nick in the blade.
Anxiously awaiting your response and input from others.
