How to size a HST

by Chris Stapley
(Washington)

I have an embroidered square that's 8" unfinished. I'd like to add 2 HST (Half Square Triangle) to each side to make it into a star.

How do I calculate the right size to cut the small squares for the HST?

Thank you for any help!

Half Square Triangle
by: Rebecca

Hi,

I would put a finished block on my cutting mat so that it looks like a diamond (on-point).

Then measure the width from point to point.

Divide that number by 2 (half).

You are now given the base of your triangle needed. Add 1/2 inch to give the grace.

Here is the size of what triangles you need.

I'm sure other people have a different method on how to do this. This is just my method.
