How Should I Hand Quilt Borders?

by Elene

I am handquilting a quilt that has 3 borders of different sizes - 3", 5" and 6".

How can I choose a quilting pattern that will work in all sizes?

Compliment or same pattern enlarged?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you so much for your answer.

Thanks for pointing out the different ideas, depending on what we want the final quilt to look like.

The quilt will be my daughters so we will discuss it together.

I appreciate your help very much. We seem to be stuck.

Variety of Quilting Options

Thank you for your question.

When quilting with multiple borders, I always ask myself if I want each border to stand out or to be visually constructed as one piece.

If you would like them to stand out individually, I would choose a different pattern for each border.

This will make the separation more dramatic.

When you want to have them stand out, but not too much contrast, go for the same stitching design. Adjust it for different sizes.

This design would be a fun one for that:

When it is preferred that all of the borders appear as one, do one pattern that crosses over all of the borders.

Here's a good example of a pattern that would work well for that:

The size on this one is approximately 6 inches. So, if you just double the design it will fit the space you need across all 3 borders.

I would love to see pictures of what you are making.

Perhaps, I could give even more suggestions if I were to see them.

Do you think you could post any?

Happy quilting,

Rebecca Humburg
