The size can be adjusted if you want to.  This is great for when you want to use the design more than once but in different dimensions.

Bring it to Life

After you have the free dragonfly quilting pattern printed out, choose your fabrics.  Decide what will be the pattern and what will be the background fabric.

Then trace the design on to some fusible.  We prefer Heat n Bond for the easy factor.  It makes this project so simple that it can be done from start to finish in under an hour!

If this is the brand you choose, use ultra-hold for non-washable wall hangings and lite-hold for anything that will see the washer.

The lite-hold is the only one that can be stitched down.  We don’t want to gum up your needles or cause a fun project to be the one to make you throw things. Don’t want to scare the kiddies. ;)

Next, cut out your design on the outer line that you traced.

Place the design on the back of the desired fabric.  Make sure the adhesive side is against the wrong side of the material.  It could get mess if the adhesive side touches the iron.   Yuck!

Then, with a medium hot iron, press the fusible and count to 3.

Now that the fusible is on the fabric, cut fabric along the inner lines of the fusible.  This particular step is what helps the designs look so good and have less fraying or whiskers on the edges.

After that is accomplished, arrange the applique in the ideal position on the background fabric.

Got the perfect placement?

Excellent!  Iron press the applique into place to the count of 5.

Once that is finished, it’s time to stitch it down with a satin stitch if you planned to do so.  This is done with a tight zigzag stitch.

Isn't that the simplest applique project?

Now for a few ideas on when or where to use this design.

This dragonfly can be used on bed quilts of course, but where else do you see it fitting in?

On purses, handbags, and tote bags would be just a few places.  It has worked nicely as a wall hanging too.

As we like to say, the imagination is the only limitation.

Wrap Up

We’re sure this free dragonfly quilting pattern will take a life all of its own when you work with it.

This cute little insect is sure to delight anyone who sees your finished work of art.

Until next time.

Happy quilting,
