Easy Quilts

“Triangle Away”

Our site is filled with several ways to make easy quilts using squares.  Now we’ll show you a few ways to make them using triangles.

Don’t worry triangles are simple to make and easy to convert into squares.

We’ll walk you through the process.

To make perfect triangles just start with fabric squares.  Then cut them diagonally.  This is the perfect time saving method.

Once the triangles are cut, assemble them to the squares or with other triangles that they should be partnered with.  The pattern that you are going off of will dictate which.

We find that this is the perfect technique for when you’re making a quilt using the following patterns:

  • Flying Geese
  • Old Maid’s Puzzle
  • Arrow
  • Birds in the Air
  • Pinwheels
  • Eight Pointed Stars

And many more possibilities are out there.

Here we will show you how to make a 6x6 inch pinwheel quilting block.  It’s a simple pattern that is easy to make.  It also creates a lot of movement in your quilts.

To begin make two squares in one color and two squares in another color, that are 3 7/8 inches.  Then cut them in half diagonally.

Let us say that again.  You will have a total of 4 squares, 2 each in two different colors.  They will be diagonally cut.  This will give you a total of four triangles in each color.

Pair up the triangles, one in each color with their right sides facing each other.

Sew them together by stitching ¼ inch on one side.  Do this for each pairing.

Unfold the pair and iron press.

Match two pairs together so that the right sides of opposite colors touch each other.

Then sew this side together ¼ inch away from the edge.

Iron press after unfolding.

There should be two assembled fabrics left.  Pair them together with the opposite colors facing each other.  Make sure it the right sides of the material are touching.

Stitch them together ¼ inch away from the edge.

Unfold and press.

Voila, the quilting block is complete.

Several of these can be assembled to make a quilt top with just this pattern of blocks or mixed and matched with other blocks.  Whichever way you decide, this block is an excellent way to create movement and motion.

Wrap Up

This block pattern really is a simple way to make some easy quilts.  Try making the block and experimenting with other ones.  Mix and match them to see what appeals to you.

Until next time.

Happy quilting,
